Seminar 1: Professional English Writing for Accountants

Objective: To introduce and demonstrate a number of practical writing strategies that accountancy professionals will be able to apply when planning and writing different texttypes in English in the business world.

  • Choosing the right words
  • Writing less: ellipsis, substitution and reference
  • Rhetorical functions and structuring
  • Politeness

Seminar 2: Accountancy Report Writing

Objective: To introduce and demonstrate a series of practical communication strategies that accountancy professionals will be able to apply when planning and writing reports in English in the business world.

  • Genre analytical approach to report writing: communicative purpose, subject matter, discourse structure, vocabulary and grammar
  • The power of language:
  1. recording facts concisely, precisely and appropriately in English
  2. strengthening stance by creating active sentences
  3. interpreting information and drawing conclusions
  4. making suggestions
  5. creating cohesion in report writing
  6. expressing politeness, certainty and hedging
