Teachers Conference is an international event organized by ACCA in UK, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Caribbean, Ghana, Zambia & Kenya since 2003.  In Pakistan, we have organized two such events so far i.e. in 2004 and 2006. This year ACCA Pakistan Faculty Excel 2007 was scheduled in Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi from 24-27 April 2007.

The first conference in this connection was held in Lahore at the Emerald Hall Pearl Continental Hotel on 24 April 2007 and it was attended by 50 lecturers from the ACCA UCRS and non UCRS institutions from Lahore, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Faisalabad and Multan.

Since ACCA has launched its new qualification and this would be examined from December 2007 therefore this conference was aimed to help the faculty members in preparing themselves for the ACCA new curriculum in addition equipping the lecturers with appropriate skills for them to be able to effectively engage with their students.

Mr. Rhys Johnson – ACCA Education Consultant was invited to ACCA Pakistan to conduct 2007 Faculty Excel in Pakistan. Rhys Johnson has over 15 years experience working in the field of accountancy, financial training and education. Rhys has already worked with ACCA as the head of education and he was responsible for the development of the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) qualification, undertaking a review of the ACCA professional qualification and developing the University and College Registration Scheme (UCRS).  

Until recently Rhys was the managing director at FTC in Singapore where he was involved in the delivery of lectures for ACCA programmes in Singapore and Hong Kong.

The conference in Lahore started with the welcome note by Mr. Haroon Jan – Head of Business Development ACCA Pakistan who described the objective for arranging this event. Then the session was handed over to Mr. Rhys Johnson after sharing his brief profile with all the participants.  

Rhys divided the conference into two section i-e techniques to train the trainer and the discussion on the new qualification.

The first half of the day was spent on discussing how to run excellent ACCA exam preparation courses which included what makes an excellent lecturer; how to design a course to prepare students for ACCA exams - course structures, timings, content; how to prepare course materials (with a focus on example questions and answers); how to deliver an exam preparation lecture and conducting a course review.

This was followed by a question and answer session of thirty minutes in which a number of questions were raised by the participants especially on the areas of improvement in lecture preparation and encouraging the students to take mock examinations.

After a 30 minutes lunch break, Rhys then discussed the new ACCA Paper P1 - Professional Accountant. He shared the syllabus and contents of this examination with the participants along with the techniques to teach this paper. He recommended the participants to read the article related to paper P1 named ‘Testing, Testing – One, Two, Three’ published in January 2007 edition of Student Accountant magazine by Gareth Owen.

Rhys also discussed the changes made by ACCA in each paper under the new qualification and the approach of the examiners while preparing and marking the examinations.

The conference was very well received by the participants. Certificates of attendance and a copy of group photograph with Rhys Johnson were given to all participants by Rhys while a bouquet was presented to him by Mr. Haroon as a token of appreciation.
